The antimicrobial of chitin and chitosan extracted from shrimp shell (Palameon elegans)

Authors

Abstract:

Palaemon elegans are distributed over a wide coastline of ocean and sea waters. distilled form (chitosan) is a natural polymer with antimicrobial properties that is naturally present in the exoskeleton of crustaceans, including shrimp. Chitin and chitosan are widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, biomedical, food preparation and storage industries. 977 pieces of P. elegans shrimp with an average total length of 34.96 mm and a weight of 1.17 gr were caught on the shores of Guilan province with a sampling drij. The shrimps were transported to the laboratory in zippered bags containing ice and identified as crustaceans. Shrimp shells were separated from meat waste manually, then the cleaned shells were placed in a well-ventilated environment for dehydration and drying. After drying, the shells were ground and passed through a sieve.Elimination of mineral compounds was achieved by using 2Normal hydrochloric acid, removal of protein compounds with 5% sodium hydroxide, removal of pigment compounds with 3% sodium hypochlorite and finally removal of acetyl groups from the chitin obtained from chitosan.Chitin and chitosan obtained from shrimp shell were calculated 18.9% and 17.4%, respectively. The antimicrobial properties of the extracted chitin and chitosan on 5 bacterial strains were investigated by disk diffusion method according to NCCLS instructions. There was a significant difference in the susceptibility of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in chitin and chitosan in shrimp shell (P <0.05). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for chitin were between 125-500 and 250-5000 micrograms per liter, respectively. The minimum concentration ranges of MIC and MBC for chitosan were between 250-1000 and 500-1000 μg / l, respectively. The highest inhibition of bacterial growth (mm) in chitin and chitosan in K. pneumonia was 10.56 ± 0.08 and 15.16± 0.24, respectively. Chitosan had a higher growth inhibition ratio than chitin.

Antimicrobial and Antifungal Effects of Acid and Water-Soluble Chitosan Extracted from Indian Shrimp (Fenneropenaeus indicus) Shell

Background & Objective : Currently, efforts are underway to seek new and effective antimicrobial agents, and marine resources are potent candidates for this aim. The following study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of water-soluble and acid-soluble chitosan against some pathogenic organisms.   Materials & Method s: Inhibition zone of different concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 mg/ml) of a...

Production of Chitin and Chitosan from Shrimp Shell in Batch Culture of Lactobacillus plantarum

Lactobacillus plantarum, as a potential lactic acid and protease producer, was used for biological extraction of chitin from shrimp shell. L. plantarum was grown in a batch culture containing shrimp shell powder and date syrup, incubated at 30 °C. The produced organic acids and proteases in L. plantarum culture were able to demineralize and deproteinize shrimp shell. Percentages of deproteiniza...

Production of Chitin and Chitosan from Partially Autolyzed Shrimp Shell Materials

The effect of partial autolysis during storage of shrimp biowaste on the quality of the extracted chitin and chitosan has been investigated. Shrimp waste materials were stored in a 30 o C incubator for 1-4 days. The quality of the chitin and chitosan extracted from these materials was assessed by ash and protein analysis and in solution by viscosimetry. Chitosan from fresh biowaste, treated for...

Extraction of chitosan and its oligomers from shrimp shell waste, their characterization and antimicrobial effect

AIM The present study was performed to utilize the shrimp shell waste for chitin and chitosan production, characterization by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique and to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of chitosan oligomers produced by depolymerization of chitosan by nitrous acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chitosan was extracted from the shrimp shell waste by the chemical method and ch...

Chitin from the mollusc Chiton: Extraction, characterization and chitosan preparation

This study presents the first ever data of extracting chitin from the Chiton shell, which then converted to the soluble chitosan by soaking in the 45% NaOH solution. The obtained chitin and chitosan were characterized by the seven different methods. Antioxidant activity of the extracted chitosan was also evaluated using the two methods. The shell content was divided into calcium carbonate (90.5...
